What Is Traditional Thai Bodywork, and How Is It Different From Other Types of Massage?
Thai bodywork is a branch of Traditional Thai Medicine and is based in the belief that our bodies (and hearts and minds) exist in a state of balance or imbalance. My role as a Thai bodyworker and Somatic Practitioner is to address the physical imbalances and help facilitate cohesion in your system. Many clients come to me when something hurts, when they have been holding some emotional stress in their body, when their stomachs are telling them something is off, when their hips won't let go, and when they are carrying the weight of collective grief. Using the lens of Traditional Thai Medicine and Somatic Experiencing, I am able to address these issues with care, nuance, and intention.
What a Session Feels Like
My sessions look slower, deeper, intentional, connected, and fully present. I am not only attuning to the needs of the physical body, but I am listening to the nervous system. Waiting for the breath to shift before I sink in deeper, noticing where breath is being held and moving with strong gentleness, never forcing my way into tight muscles but able to do highly effective deep pressure with a gentle approach.
We cannot bully our way into a more relaxed system. Deep work needs to be done with care, with patience, and with consistent presence. Sometimes the body just needs to be held before it lets go. Sometimes, a strong, steady, gentle touch is all that is needed for something to release.
How It's Different
Most other forms of massage in the States are done unclothed and on a massage table. Thai bodywork is done most often fully-clothed on a mat on the floor. No, you don't have to be flexible. And yes, the massage can be very deep, relaxing, and incredibly effective. I have had all types of massage and I can honestly say, Thai bodywork is my favorite. Because it is done fully clothed, I feel safer. Because I feel safer, my body is able to relax more. Because I am able to relax more, tension and stuck patterns can release with greater ease.
What to Wear & Where to Find Me
If you're planning on scheduling a Thai bodywork session with me, please wear loose comfortable clothing (think something you would wear on a leisurely walk or to a pilates class), I actually prefer less skin exposed for the majority of the work. My office is located inside of Good Form Pilates in downtown Oregon City at 616 Main Street Suite 2 Oregon City, OR 97045.
